November 16, 2008 - chrysalis found on a chair on our front porch. We have caterpillars in our milkweed, and the butterflies have been crazy lately! I am amazed at how far this caterpillar crawled to get to this location.

  • November 16, 2008 - chrysalis found on a chair on our front porch. We have caterpillars in our milkweed, and the butterflies have been crazy lately! I am amazed at how far this caterpillar crawled to get to this location.
  • November 17, 2008 - the kids hollered excitedly that the butterfly was out of its chrysalis! I've never seen this happen before, and we didn't get to actually witness the emerging, but it must have happened right before the kids noticed, since we'd already checked on the chrysalis this morning. It hung in this location for at least an hour, moving its antennae, and slightly fluttering its wings.
  • Slightly more active now - it had moved up to the top of the chair when we weren't watching. It stayed here for about 15 minutes, flapping its wings.

  • We did get to see it fly to the screen door. It must have felt vulnerable because it only stayed here a moment.
  • Sitting in a nearby potted plant, it flapped its wings for another 15 minutes or more before flying away when we weren't watching.
